Yesterday marked the first day of Camp Kiki, 2010 Edition. I picked up the Munchkins in Waco where we spent a couple of hours enjoying the Dr. Pepper Museum. They actually have a traveling educational exhibit currently inhabiting part of their second floor. The exhibit teaches kids all about money, how to handle it (i.e. invest and save), and how people in other countries live. It was really quite interesting and the kids loved it. Especially since they got to make their own money for their own countries.
Before we left, we headed down to the soda fountain to get a last soda for the road. They have a real soda shop, complete with a soda jerk. The kids and their mom and g'ma arrived quite a bit before I did, as I got detained in Dallas longer than expected. So, they'd already partaken in the soda shop's bounty of ice cream and Dr. Pepper. While we waited in line, I asked The Boy if he thought he could handle the amount of sugar in a 16 oz Dr. Pepper considering his massive sugar consumption only an hour or so before. His deadpan response is my quote of the day -
"Kiki, I can handle A LOT of sugar."
Glad to know he's been training!
After we got home, we discussed potential dinner locations. The Boy wanted something he'd never had before, and specifically, a type of food he'd never had before. We always have a mission when we have them to take them to try new thing and he's completely on board. Little Miss is not. She wanted something she'd not only had before but also liked. Hmmm....
So, we settled on Gloria's. It has a mix of Mexican, Tex-Mex, Salvadorian, Salv-Tex, and other South American foods. It's also delicious!
While at the restaurant, I informed Little Miss that we had a rule for the weekend - she could only order chicken fingers once. Gasp. She was much taken aback by this news as it's her standard order. In fact, it's her only order. Ever. Okay, so once in a blue moon (and if pressed) she'll ordering something revolutionary and different like a hot dog. Wow. She shares the love of all brown foods, like so many kids.
So, we perused the non-kid's menu and finally settled on flautas. I figured, they're fried, brown, and involve chicken so she's bound to like them at least enough to eat them. She'd never had them before. What kid hasn't even had taquitos? I also ordered us a couple orders of pork Pupusas (a Salvadorian special, which is sort of like a tortilla filled with meat and then pan fried/cooked). They were delicious! Even Little Miss liked them. I think the fact that they were brown and fried put them already in her favor. Then the flautas came:
Little Miss ate around them for quite a while. She really liked the beans and rice, mixed. Yea us when those hit. She tried things from our dishes, and liked quite a bit. Grilled chicken with tomatillo sauce? Good. Argentinean sausage? Not so much. As for the flautas, here's the answer I got - "they're okay." Honey, I happen to agree. They were great as flautas go but I always find flautas boring. However, she LOVED the fried plantains. Go figure. She still isn't so sure about the trying new things thing but we're working on her.
